What Age Is Autism Usually Diagnosed?

Autism is most commonly diagnosed between ages 2 and 3, though signs can appear even earlier. Some children show clear developmental differences, like delayed speech, lack of eye contact, or limited social interaction, as early as 12 to 18 months. Pediatricians often screen for autism at regular checkups, typically around 18 and 24 months.

While early diagnosis is ideal, some children aren’t diagnosed until later, especially if symptoms are subtle or mistaken for other developmental delays. A formal diagnosis is made through comprehensive evaluations that may include observation, developmental history, and standardized tools like the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule).

Early diagnosis opens the door to early intervention, which can greatly improve a child’s communication, social skills, and independence over time.
