What Are the Signs of Autism in a 4-Year-Old?

June 26, 2025

Autism signs in a 4-year-old can vary, but common indicators often appear in communication, behavior, and social interaction. You might notice your child avoids eye contact, has delayed speech, or repeats words and phrases (echolalia). Some children struggle to play with others, prefer routines, or become upset by small changes.

Other signs include intense interests in specific topics or toys, sensitivity to lights, sounds, or textures, and repetitive movements like hand-flapping or rocking. Your child may also have trouble understanding emotions or following simple instructions.

Every child is different, so showing one or two of these signs doesn’t automatically mean autism, but if you have concerns, it’s best to seek a professional evaluation.
