Can Screen Time Cause Autism?
No, screen time does not cause autism.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder believed to be caused by a combination of genetics and early brain development, not by watching TV, using tablets, or playing video games.
While excessive screen time can impact language development, sleep, and behavior in any child, it’s not a root cause of autism. Some children with autism may prefer screens because they offer predictable patterns and reduce the stress of social interaction—but that’s a result of autism, not the cause.
It’s important for all children, autistic or not, to have a healthy balance of screen use, physical activity, and face-to-face interactions.
At Blue Jay ABA, we help families across North Carolina understand their child’s needs and support healthy routines through personalized in-home ABA therapy.
