What Are Calming Items for Autism?

Children with autism often experience sensory sensitivities that can make everyday environments overwhelming. Calming items are tools designed to help regulate emotions, reduce anxiety, and provide comfort.

Common calming items include:

  • Weighted blankets or lap pads – These provide deep pressure input, which can be soothing and grounding.

  • Fidget toys – Small, tactile items help children focus and release nervous energy.

  • Noise‑canceling headphones – Useful for reducing overwhelming sounds in busy or loud environments.

  • Chewelry or sensory chew toys – Safe outlets for oral sensory needs.

  • Visual aids like calming lights or sensory bottles – These offer visual stimulation that promotes relaxation.

These items are not “one‑size‑fits‑all.” Each child may respond differently, so it’s important to explore what works best for their unique sensory profile. When paired with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, calming items can support skill development by helping children stay regulated and ready to learn.

At Blue Jay ABA, we are serving families, and we integrate sensory support into individualized ABA therapy programs in North Carolina to help children thrive at home, school, and in the community.
