How Do You Know If Your Child Is Not Autistic?

August 17, 2025

Autism is a spectrum, and signs can vary widely, which is why only a qualified professional can confirm whether or not a child is autistic. However, there are some developmental patterns that may suggest your child is not showing traits typically associated with autism.

A child who is not autistic generally meets communication and social milestones on time. They make consistent eye contact, respond to their name, engage in back-and-forth conversations (appropriate to their age), and show interest in playing or interacting with peers. They may adapt well to changes in routine and display flexible thinking during play.

That said, every child develops at their own pace. A delay in speech, for example, doesn’t automatically mean autism; it could be related to hearing, environment, or other factors. Similarly, shyness or a preference for solo play doesn’t necessarily indicate autism.

If you have concerns, the most reliable way to know is to seek a developmental screening or autism evaluation from a pediatrician or specialist.

At Blue Jay ABA, we help families understand their child’s needs and provide early ABA support when needed.
