When supporting a child with autism, it's important to know what to do, and what to avoid to foster positive growth and development. Here’s a quick guide to the do's and don'ts:

Do’s:

  • Be patient: Children with autism may process information differently. Give them time to respond and adjust to new routines.

  • Provide structure: Consistent routines help reduce anxiety and improve focus.

  • Use clear communication: Visual aids, simple instructions, and a calm tone can help your child better understand expectations.

  • Encourage social skills: Gently prompt social interactions and praise efforts, even if small.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t make assumptions: Autism affects each child differently. Avoid assuming what your child needs based on others’ experiences.

  • Don’t force social interactions: Respect your child’s pace in social settings. Pushing them too much can lead to stress or withdrawal.

  • Don’t ignore sensory needs: Be mindful of sensory sensitivities, like bright lights or loud sounds, which can overwhelm your child.

Supporting your child with autism requires a blend of understanding, patience, and flexibility.
